This year, for the first time in the history of the Georgiy Gongagdze prize, a special award was introduced : the committee posthumously honoured the late photojournalist Maks Levin with a special commendation for his " noteworthy contribution to the development of Ukrainian photography, devotion to the profession and personal bravery ". The winner of the Prize will be traditionally announced on May 21, Georgiy Gongadze's birthday. In 2021, Sydorenko received the National Award for High Standards in Journalism in the category of "Sustainable, high-quality media project/product". Since 2014, the publication has grown into a reputable and accessible source of reportage on international politics and European integration. Serhiy Sydorenko is a journalist, and the co-founder and chief editor of the publication Evropeiska Pravda (European Truth). For more than two weeks, alongside Mstyslav Chernov, he documented the relentless blockade and bombardment of the city and its toll on the civilian population. Maloletka entered Maripuol the eve of Russia’s full-scale invasion in late February of 2022. As a freelancer he has filed for international outlets including the Associated Press, Al Jazeera and Der Spiegel. Yevhen Maloletka has worked as a professional photojournalist since 2009. Alongside Yevhen Maloletka, Chernov was one of the only journalists working for the international media who remained inside Mariupol to cover the Russian blockade as invading troops closed in. He is the current president of the Ukrainian Association of Professional Photographers. Mstyslav Chernov is a journalist for the Associated Press with extensive experience as a photographer and war correspondent. It includes the photographer duo Mstyslav Chernov and Yevhen Maloletka, as well as Serhiy Sydorenko and Tetyana Troshchynska. The Georgiy Gongadze Prize Committee has determined the shortlist of nominees for the 2022 award.
